It’s not invasive, but it’s still a medical treatment, so we at Rejuvenate Clinics completely understand if you have some questions before proceeding with your Botulinum Toxin/Botox treatment. It’s one of our most popular treatments and therefore something we do every day, but we appreciate that if Botox is new to you, you’ll have things you want to ask. Here, we try and answer the questions clients most commonly ask.

Botulinum Toxin Treatment - Fillers and Botox Southampton

How exactly does is it work?

The treatment involves a protein that is a neurotoxin being injected into the skin using a tiny needle. Botulinum Toxin blocks the nerve impulses to temporarily stop the muscles from moving, which then in turn lessens the appearance of wrinkles or prevents them from occurring at all. Overall, your complexion will appear younger-looking, softer and smoother.

Is it safe?

No treatment comes without its risks, however when treated by an experienced practitioner these risks are extremely low. Botox has an excellent safety record as a muscle relaxant and there’s a long history of its use in medicine, both cosmetically and for health conditions.

Botox, one of the most popular and common aesthetic treatments of its kind, has been FDA approved and used to successfully improve the appearance of wrinkles for over 30 years. So, while concerns are common and understandable, there’s no reason why your procedure should not be completely trouble-free.

Does the treatment hurt?

This is understandably a commonly asked question. The treatment is generally completed within 20 minutes and you can safely drive, return to work and carry on your normal daily activities on the day of the procedure. You should feel nothing beyond mild discomfort, some localised tenderness, and the pinprick of a super-fine needle.

What about any side-effects?

As mentioned, Botox has been used safely for years! Serious long term side effects are very rare. Common side effects include minor redness and tenderness and temporary swelling at the injection site, these usually settle after an hour. Bruising is a possibility also, but the severity will vary from person to person.

As with any medical treatment, allergic reactions can occasionally happen – although side-effects for Botox are generally extremely rare. Almost all of the things which can happen are short-lived; these include.

There may even be some unintended benefits, such as relief for tension headaches.

Is it a permanent treatment?

No. It can take up to two weeks before you notice the full effects of the treatment. The results can then last for as long as six months, but for most people it will be nearer four. (However, wrinkles may be less marked when they do return.)

Treatments can be repeated every three months as a minimum.

Will I still display facial expressions?

Yes. The fear of being left unable to smile after a cosmetic procedure is well known. You’ll still be able to make certain facial expressions in order for it to look natural– and we’ll gladly discuss this side of things at your consultation to give you your desired results.

Any tips for aftercare?

You need to ensure that you are careful for 4 hours post treatment; no laying down, house work or vigorous activities, this is to ensure the Botox doesn’t get into a muscle that it’s not intended to be in. Don’t touch the injected area for a few hours. Do not consume alcohol for 24 hours to limit bruising. No exercise, saunas or steam rooms for 48 hours post treatment also. Any mild discomfort can usually be treated with paracetamol, while you can also use Arnica to soothe any bruising.
