How is a non-surgical rhinoplasty different to a surgical rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty – more commonly known as a ‘nose job’ – is a procedure which rebuilds and changes the appearance of the nose.
In the past your only option would have been surgery to correct any imperfections with your nose, but that just isn’t the case anymore. The non-surgical nose job means you can transform the way this facial feature looks and have more self-confidence, without going under the knife.
Let’s look at both options in a little more detail to see how they compare.
Surgical rhinoplasty
There’s no getting away from the fact that this is an invasive procedure, requiring a general anaesthetic, which obviously comes with various risks of its own. The surgeon reshapes your nose manually after cutting it open. The procedure might involve having some bone chiselled away and cartilage reshaped and resized. As with any surgery, there are risks and potential side effects too which must be seriously considered. Everyone recovers differently but it is highly likely that you will experience bruising, swelling and black eyes which can potentially last for several weeks. The end results are also irreversible, unlike filler which can be dissolved.
With a surgical rhinoplasty there is also likely to be some moderate pain and discomfort alongside possible headaches. Other potential side effects include scarring, a loss of sensation and smell, breathing problems and septal perforation (although rare).
After surgery, you will need time to recover. Your nose is likely to feel blocked and you’ll have a nose splint on for a minimum of a week. You will be in hospital for a day or two and you will not be able to drive for 24 hours after surgery. It is recommended to take some time off work to recover post operatively and it can be a few weeks before you feel 100% recovered.
One big advantage of surgery is that the results are permanent (that is, if there is a positive improvement).
Non-surgical rhinoplasty or ‘nose job’
Non-surgical rhinoplasty is a quick and relatively safe procedure when carried out by an experienced practitioner. By carefully placing dermal filler in specific points, we can change the appearance and shape of your nose which will in turn, enhance your side profile and can give the appearance of a smaller more aesthetically pleasing nose. Your nose can appear thinner, a bump can disappear, and the tip can be lifted. It’s also possible to reduce a ‘ski jump’ nose or straighten a crooked one. These small changes can have a positively large impact on not only the way your nose looks, but also your confidence.
It’s non-invasive, there’s less trauma, you’re not taking the risks associated with a general anaesthetic and it’s reversible if you decide that actually, you prefer your old nose after all. And while you may experience some discomfort, it’s likely to be a far more comfortable experience than you thought, and less painful than surgery involving a general anaesthetic.
You may feel a slight pinching as the needle goes in, with perhaps a little pressure from the filler, however, unlike surgery, no bone is chiselled, and no tissue cut, therefore the risks of damage or infection remain far lower than with the surgical alternative.
Of course, like any procedure, it’s not without its risks. You may experience a small amount of bruising at the injection sites along with a little bit of swelling. The filler can, in exceedingly rare cases, migrate from the area where it was injected. However, this issue can be easily fixed if necessary, and, in the vast majority of cases, non-surgical rhinoplasty doesn’t involve serious complications when carried out by an experienced practitioner.
What’s more, treatment typically takes no more than 30 minutes with very little recovery time. Carry on with your day as usual post-treatment and look forward to immediately noticeable results. You don’t have to take time off work or wear a nose splint, and while minor swelling and bruising are likely, this typically starts to settle after a couple of days.
Results last up to 18 months.
Finally, another major benefit of non-surgical rhinoplasty is price. It’s much more affordable than the surgical equivalent.
